Hegseth Says U.S. Can Resume Iran Strikes, Toronto Sun Reports

toronto sun reports Pete Hegseth said the U.S. military is more than capable of resuming strikes on Iran if peace talks collapse. President Donald Trump had not made a final determination on the proposed Iran peace agreement by Sunday, after saying Friday he would decide following a Situation Room meeting over the weekend.

That meeting ended without an announcement. The statement leaves military pressure on the table while talks continue, and it comes as Israeli forces push deeper into Lebanon under an expanded offensive ordered by Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump Decision Pending

Trump said Friday he would make a decision after the weekend meeting, then gave no announcement on Sunday. In an interview with Lara Trump, he described Iranian officials as very tough negotiators, keeping the focus on whether a deal can still hold.

Abbas Araghchi said talks with the United States were ongoing and that any deal could not be judged before a definitive outcome is reached. His comments matched the uncertainty around the negotiations, which remain open while Washington keeps the option of renewed strikes available.

Lebanon And The Gulf Of Oman

On Saturday, the U.S. military disabled a Gambian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman. U.S. CENTCOM said the vessel was disabled as part of Trump's blockade on Iranian ports, while CENTCOM also showcased its teams working on an F-16 fighter jet at a base with forces stationed throughout the region.

At the same time, Netanyahu ordered an expanded military offensive in Lebanon, and Israel continued to drive deeper into the country in its efforts to weed out Hezbollah despite a supposed ceasefire with the nation. Macron urged Washington and Tehran to reach an agreement as soon as possible, keeping diplomatic pressure on both sides.

Iran's Internal Strain

Iran International reported Sunday that Masoud Pezeshkian submitted a letter of resignation to the Office of the Supreme Leader. The report said his letter described the president and his government as excluded from major decision-making, and said hard-line factions within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had taken control of key affairs.

The report also said Pezeshkian wrote that he was unable to govern effectively or fulfill his legal responsibilities and requested to step down immediately. It said it was unclear whether Mojtaba Khamenei's office would accept the resignation, adding another layer of pressure around talks that are still unresolved.
