Randy Feenstra watch party set for June 2 in Spirit Lake

Stephanie Steiner of Sutherland will host an Election Night Watch Party on Tuesday, June 2, at Okoboji Brewing Company in Spirit Lake as results come in from Iowa’s 4th Congressional District Democratic primary. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. at 3705 U.S. Highway 71.

Steiner’s campaign has centered on affordability concerns, access to healthcare, water quality, and Iowa’s rising cancer rates. She said, “Primary elections are where voters make one of the most important decisions in our democracy,” and added, “This is the election where voters decide who they want to see on the November ballot and who they believe is best prepared to represent Iowa’s 4th Congressional District.”

The watch party will include food, drinks, and live music from local musician Sonya Johnsen. Steiner described herself as “a wife, a mother of seven, a grandmother, a former women’s health nurse and a small livestock producer living in rural Iowa,” and said, “I understand the challenges families face because I’ve lived them.”

Iowa uses a closed primary system, which requires voters to be registered with a political party to take part in that party’s primary. Voters may update their party registration at their polling place on Election Day, through their County Auditor’s Office, or through the state’s online voter registration system.

The primary is a three-way Democratic contest in the 4th Congressional District, and at least 68,000 Iowans had already cast ballots early, according to the Iowa Secretary of State’s office. Steiner also said, “I have supporters who are Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and everything in between,” and, “No matter your political background, your voice matters.”

That mix of an open invitation in Spirit Lake and a closed primary on the ballot gives Tuesday’s watch party a narrow purpose: it is a place for supporters to wait on results, not a substitute for party registration. If voters want to participate in the primary, they need to be registered with a party before they cast a ballot, or update that registration at the polling place or through county election offices.

Steiner said, “If elected, the people of Iowa’s 4th Congressional District will be my first priority,” and, “I don’t come with political baggage. I come with life experience, and I will never forget who I am fighting for.” For voters deciding whether to attend in person or take part in the primary, the practical step is simple: arrive at Okoboji Brewing Company after 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, or make sure party registration is in place before voting.
