Blue Jays Acquire Simeon Woods Richardson Back From Twins
The Blue Jays are acquiring simeon woods richardson back from the Twins after Minnesota designated the 25-year-old right-hander for assignment over the weekend. The move sends him back to Toronto for the second time, with cash considerations going to Minnesota.
Toronto’s Second Woods Richardson Trade
This is the second time the Blue Jays front office has brought Woods Richardson into the organization. Toronto first acquired him from the Mets in 2019 as part of the Marcus Stroman deal, then traded him and Austin Martin to Minnesota in 2021 for José Berríos.
The sequence leaves Toronto back where it started with a pitcher who is still only 25 years old. That makes this one of the more unusual roster loops in the Blue Jays’ recent transaction history, with the same player changing hands twice between the same clubs.
Minnesota Moves On
Minnesota designated Woods Richardson for assignment over the weekend before the deal came together. At 6:31pm, reports said the Blue Jays were acquiring him back from the Twins, and at 6:42pm, reports said the Twins would receive cash considerations in return.
Woods Richardson had once been regarded as one of the better pitching prospects in MLB, but his stay with Minnesota had gone poorly enough to push him off the roster. Toronto now gets another shot at a pitcher it once valued enough to include in a major trade package, and the Twins exit the move with cash instead of a player.
For Toronto, the transaction is less about adding a new name than revisiting an old one. For Minnesota, it ends with a roster cut that opened the door to a deal over the weekend and sent Woods Richardson back to the organization that first brought him in through the Marcus Stroman trade.
