Portugal Airport Strike Cancellations Hit 658 Flights Nationwide
Portugal airport strike cancellations grounded 658 flights nationwide on Wednesday, leaving air travel across the country in disarray. Lisbon Airport took the biggest hit, with ANA saying 408 of its 658 scheduled flights were cancelled.
Lisbon Airport and the Azores
ANA said Lisbon Airport was the worst affected airport, where 62% of scheduled flights did not take off as planned. Ponta Delgada Airport in the Azores recorded the second-highest cancellation rate at 41%, giving passengers in Portugal’s busiest and farthest-flung gateways the sharpest disruption.
The numbers show how quickly the strike spread beyond a single terminal. At Porto Airport, around a third of all flights were cancelled, while Faro saw roughly 30% of scheduled operations grounded.
Madeira, Porto Santo and Horta
Madeira also faced disruption, with around 23% of flights cancelled. Porto Santo and Horta reported minimal or no disruption, creating a stark split between airports that were heavily hit and others that continued operating with little interruption.
ANA provided the cancellation figures, and the pattern across Lisbon, the Azores, Porto, Faro and Madeira gives passengers the clearest guide to where the strike bit hardest. Travelers booked through the worst-hit airports faced the largest share of cancellations on Wednesday, especially in Lisbon and Ponta Delgada.
The immediate takeaway for passengers is simple: the strike removed nearly 45% of scheduled operations across Portugal on Wednesday, with Lisbon alone accounting for 408 cancellations. That left the country’s main hub carrying the heaviest load of the disruption, while a smaller number of airports remained comparatively steady.
