Northern Ireland Vs Guinea: O’Neill Sees Tough Test in Spain
Northern Ireland face Guinea in northern ireland vs guinea at Estadio Ciudad de La Línea on 5 June 2025, with the friendly set for a 5pm BST kick-off. Michael O’Neill expects a stiff examination before Northern Ireland move on to France four days later.
Estadio Ciudad de La Línea
O’Neill described Guinea as “a tough enough test against an athletic team,” and the fixture gives Northern Ireland a first meeting with opposition from the western part of the African continent. They have played Algeria, Morocco twice and South Africa before, but never a side from that region.
The match sits in a useful pocket of their June schedule. Northern Ireland are 70th in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Rankings, while Guinea are 81st, and the game comes before the away friendly against France, who are number one in the world.
Guinea Squad and Recent Form
Paulo Duarte took over as Guinea head coach last August and has already tightened their results. Guinea won four and drew three of their 10 World Cup qualifiers in Group G, and they held Algeria to a 0-0 draw in the autumn.
Since October, Guinea have played four friendlies against African opposition, winning one, drawing two and losing one narrowly. More than half of their 23-man squad are 22 or under, and most of the group play club football in Europe, mainly in Spain, Belgium and France.
That mix leaves Northern Ireland with a side that is young, well-travelled and short on senior mileage in some spots, even without Serhou Guirassy in the squad. Yakhouba Barry has seven goals in 25 games, Abdoul Traore has three goals in three senior international outings, and Morlaye Sylla brings the most caps in the panel with 44 appearances alongside eight goals.
Northern Ireland’s June Run
O’Neill said the friendly may also give game time to players who have not featured much internationally before, which gives the squad a chance to stretch beyond the usual core. Seydouba Cisse, with 27 caps, and Amadou Diawara, with 43, add experience to a group that has not needed to rely on one route to goal.
For Northern Ireland, the immediate task is simple: handle Guinea in Spain, then recover for France away on 8 June 2025. The friendlies form part of a June double header, and this first one offers a better read on the squad than a routine warm-up because the opponent is ranked above several recent qualifiers they have faced.
