Anchorage Issues Red Flag (fire Weather) Warning for Bristol Bay Thursday
The National Weather Service in Anchorage issued a red flag (fire weather) warning for Inland Bristol Bay, Lake Iliamna, Nila Vena and Nanvarpak from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM Thursday, June 4, 2026. The warning covers an eight-hour window of critical fire weather conditions driven by hot, dry and windy weather.
The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection said, “Critical fire weather conditions are expected due to hot, dry, and windy conditions.” It also warned that “Any new fire starts or existing fires may spread rapidly.”
Inland Bristol Bay Thursday
The area most conducive to those conditions will be Iliamna and surrounding areas, while Port Alsworth will also see hot temperatures and dry conditions Thursday afternoon and evening. Port Alsworth is expected to have less wind than other areas, but northwest winds gusting up to 20 mph at times are forecast across the area into the evening.
Temperatures in the Inland Bristol Bay area are expected to be a couple degrees cooler than Wednesday, but low relative humidity is still expected to keep hot, dry and windy conditions in place through the evening.
Burn permits and fire risk
In Alaska, a Red Flag Warning means that warm temperatures, low humidity and strong winds are combining with dry fuels like grass and dead trees to create a high risk of wildfire. Emery Johnson, the Division of Forestry & Fire Protection Public Information Coordinator, was listed as a contact for more information about the warning and the burn permit program, and the division said permit information and suspensions are available at dnr.alaska.gov/burn.
That makes the warning more than a short-term weather notice for people in the affected region. Anyone using burn permits in the area is dealing with a period when conditions can change quickly, and the notice points readers to the state burn permit program for current information.
Friday Cooling Trend
A cooling trend with higher relative humidity is forecast to begin Friday and last into the weekend across the region. Until then, the warning period runs through 9:00 PM Thursday, with the strongest fire weather concerns centered on the hot, dry and windy setup described in the notice.
