Met Office Issues Yellow Warning for Uk South Coast Strong Winds

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for uk south coast strong winds across parts of the south and south-west of England until 21:00 BST. Gusts of 45 to 50mph are likely, with 55mph possible in exposed areas.

The warning covers Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, English Channel coastal districts and the Isle of Wight. The Met Office said delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport were possible, alongside power outages and damage to temporary structures.

Linda Ludlow and low pressure

South West broadcast meteorologist Linda Ludlow said an area of low pressure was sweeping across the region, bringing “unseasonable June weather with persistent rain and strong winds.” The peak recorded gust so far this morning was 51mph on the Isles of Scilly.

The warning reached Sussex by mid-afternoon, while heavy and persistent rain was expected to sweep east for the rest of the morning. Brightening was expected in the far west with sunny spells, and the wind was expected to clear Devon by mid-afternoon before turning more westerly and fresh to strong by late afternoon.

Coastal districts and travel

For people in the affected coastal districts, the immediate issue is not just stronger gusts but the mix of wind, rain and timing. The Met Office said the regions would experience unseasonably strong winds, and coastal areas were also facing sea spray and large waves.

By overnight, conditions were expected to become less windy. Tomorrow was expected to be a breezy but drier and brighter day with cloudy skies.
