Luis Lara Lands $31 Million Brewers Extension Before MLB Debut
luis lara agreed to a seven-year, $31 million extension with the Milwaukee Brewers before playing his first major league game. The 21-year-old will remain in Triple-A for the time being, giving Milwaukee a long-term answer on a prospect who has already moved quickly through its system.
Lara and Milwaukee move early
The deal can climb to $79 million if the Brewers exercise three team options, and it comes while Lara is still in Nashville. He is hitting.338/.447/.500 with seven homers and 18 stolen bases in 56 games, production that has kept him on the radar as one of the organization’s top young players.
MLB.com ranked Lara as Milwaukee’s fifth-best prospect and No. 91 overall entering the season. He signed with the Brewers as an international free agent in June 2022, and the extension arrives before his MLB debut rather than after he has established himself in the majors.
Brewers keep core under control
Lara is the second Brewers prospect to get a pre-debut long-term deal this season. Milwaukee previously signed Cooper Pratt to an eight-year, $50.8 million contract on March 30, and Pratt has yet to reach the big leagues either.
The same pattern has now given the Brewers two more young players tied up before their first MLB appearance, with Colt Emerson’s eight-year, $95 million deal with the Seattle Mariners serving as the other example among prospects this season. Lara also won a Minor League Gold Glove Award in 2025 for his defense in center field, adding another layer to why Milwaukee moved now.
That leaves Milwaukee with a group that now includes Lara and Pratt under long-term control before either has debuted, alongside Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang and Jacob Misirowski through at least 2029. For Lara, the immediate step is simple: keep producing in Triple-A while the Brewers wait on his next promotion window.
