Josh Donaldson Brew Jays Game: 4-for-4 Night Ends in 12-9 Loss

Josh Donaldson Brew Jays game ended with a 12-9 loss for Newmarket’s beer league softball team, but the former Blue Jays star still went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and a single on Monday night. The Brew Jays fell to 0-4, and the night turned a local matchup against the Blue Fins into a one-off showpiece for the roster.

Donaldson Answers Devon Martin

Last Thursday, Brew Jays player Devon Martin sent Donaldson a direct message asking for a chance to play with him. Donaldson answered, “Where do you play and when?”

By Monday night, he was there in Blue Jays gear. The Brew Jays had already built the moment around his arrival, with team captain Caleb Garbe delivering a speech before the game and the club chanting “Devon! Devon!” as Donaldson walked to the dugout.

Brew Jays Turned One Game

Donaldson’s line carried the night. He reached base four times in four trips and drove in power that the Brew Jays could not match on the scoreboard, even with the Blue Fins on the other side.

The one-night appearance fit the profile of a player who spent four seasons with Toronto and hit 116 home runs for the Blue Jays. Donaldson won the 2015 A.L. MVP award, hit 41 home runs and drove in 123 runs that season, and the Brew Jays leaned into that history by presenting him with a June 8 one-day contract that named him a “Brew Jay For Life.”

Matthew Jenkins Saw It Up Close

Matthew Jenkins called the experience “like no other” after the game, and said Donaldson was “an idol of a lot of us growing up and getting to share the field with him was surreal. Truly a moment we will all never forget.” He added, “Had to keep my head on a swivel there, no net, scared for my life a little bit,” after Donaldson hit two home runs, and finished by saying, “Pleasure playing with our boy JD and hope to see him around a little more often. I think we need his help and he definitely mashes.”

For the Brew Jays, the result stayed the same. For one Monday night, though, a Newmarket beer league game carried a former major leaguer, a direct message, and a 4-for-4 line that gave the team something to hold onto even after the loss.
