Breel Embolo ESTA Review Delays Switzerland’s US Travel

breel embolo was unable to travel to the United States with Switzerland on Tuesday after his ESTA travel authorization was placed under further review hours before departure. The delay left the forward in Zurich while the rest of the squad prepared to leave for a World Cup trip that already carries entry pressure beyond the pitch.

Embolo and Switzerland in Zurich

The Swiss Football Association said it was told hours before the team was due to travel that Embolo’s ESTA authorization had been placed under further review. Its statement said, “Unfortunately, Breel Embolo is currently unable to travel to the United States with the team.”

It added, “His ESTA authorisation had been approved until this morning. However, at 10:30am, we were informed that his ESTA application had been placed under further review.” That left the forward stranded from the squad’s Tuesday departure, with the team’s social media post showing one seat empty on the plane.

Swiss Football Association and the empty seat

The Swiss team’s Instagram account posted a picture of the players aboard an airplane with the caption, “One seat empty, but not for long?See you soon @breelembolo97 ✈️.” The message made the immediate problem visible: Switzerland was moving on schedule, but one of its most established attackers was not on board.

Embolo plays for Stade Rennais and has already crossed into the United States since his 2023 Swiss court conviction for making threats against a person when he was 21 years old. His appeal was rejected last September, yet he still scored in Switzerland’s 4-0 win over the U.S. men’s national team in Tennessee in June 2025. The new review shows how quickly entry decisions can change even after prior travel through the same system.

World Cup travel before June 13

Switzerland opens its World Cup campaign on June 13 against Qatar in San Francisco, with Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina also in the group. The timing makes Embolo’s case more than a one-player delay, because the U.S. is one of the tournament’s joint hosts and the team must keep its travel plans intact while this review sits over a key attacker.

The wider issue is not limited to Switzerland. The same entry checks could affect other players, staff and supporters with criminal histories seeking to enter the United States, and other teams have already faced similar logistical problems on the way to the tournament. For Switzerland, the immediate question is whether Embolo gets clearance in time to join the squad before the group stage begins.
