Suzuki Leaves With Knee Discomfort in Cubs News Win Over Giants

cubs news turned to Seiya Suzuki on Saturday night in San Francisco when he left the Cubs' game against the Giants with right knee discomfort after making several strong defensive plays. The exit came after he had already dealt with a right knee sprain earlier this season, making the update one Chicago has to watch closely.

Suzuki’s fourth-inning exit

Suzuki was in right field when the inning turned. He had already thrown a runner out at second base and made a terrific sliding catch before trying a running, reaching grab on a fly ball in the fourth inning.

The ball dropped for a hit when he could not get there in time, and he stumbled to the ground on the play. He then departed with the trainer, and Mike Shaw took over in right field.

Cubs right field defense

The performance still fit the wider picture of Suzuki’s defense this season. Pete Crow-Armstrong said, “Those two plays he made were pretty incredible,” and added, “Everybody knows he’s got a really good arm.”

“It’s always fun getting to watch him show it off,” Crow-Armstrong said, and on the earlier throw he added, “He put that thing on the money.” Those plays came before the discomfort, and they were the kind of snaps that had already made his right field work look sharper.

After the game

After the game, Counsell said, “The reports after he came out were positive,” but added, “the most important thing is: How is he going to feel tomorrow?” Suzuki said through an interpreter, “I’m wishing it’s not a big deal,” and, “I’ll wake up tomorrow, see how everything feels.”

He also said, “If I can go from there, go for it. If not, we’ll see how it goes.” That leaves Chicago waiting on how his knee responds after a night that started with two strong defensive plays and ended with another test for the same knee that kept him out at the start of the season.
