Shaw's OT Winner Lifts Marlies to 2-0 Lead — Hockey Game
Logan Shaw ended a wild hockey game at 3:46 of overtime Sunday, lifting the Toronto Marlies to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Wolves and a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Calder Cup final. Toronto now returns home needing three more wins to claim the American Hockey League championship series.
Shaw scored his second goal of the game on the winner, capping a night in which Benoit-Olivier Groulx added two goals, Alex Nylander scored once, and Vinni Lettieri and William Villeneuve each finished with three assists. The Marlies spread the offense through a game that stayed tight right through the extra period.
Toronto's scoring depth
The Marlies did not lean on one line to get there. Groulx's pair gave Toronto a steady scoring base, while Nylander added another finish and Lettieri and Villeneuve handled the playmaking with three assists apiece.
That balance mattered after the Wolves pushed back several times. The teams were tied with 32 shots apiece, and Toronto went 0-for-2 on the power play while Chicago finished 1-for-4.
Chicago keeps answering
Juuso Valimaki scored twice for the Wolves, and Charles Alexis Legault and Noah Philp also scored. Justin Robidas and Ryan Suzuki each set up two goals, keeping Chicago within reach after the Wolves had already dropped Friday's opener 4-2.
Chicago led 2-1 after the first period, but Toronto moved ahead 3-2 heading into the third. The Wolves kept clawing back, forcing overtime before Shaw settled it at 3:46.
Coca-Cola Coliseum awaits
The Marlies now carry a 2-0 edge back to Toronto, where Games 3, 4 and 5 if necessary are scheduled for Coca-Cola Coliseum. Game 3 is Tuesday, and Toronto can finish the American Hockey League championship series at home if it keeps the series moving in the same direction.
