RJ Scaringe maps Rivian R2 to 2027 mass-market push

RJ Scaringe laid out the 2027 rivian r2 as the vehicle Rivian is building around while it moves from lower-volume, higher-priced SUVs and trucks into the mass-market arena. The discussion puts the company’s next big bet in view for buyers, and it ties the product plan directly to factory capacity, service, and charging support.

Scaringe in Park City

Scaringe sat down with Joel for an exclusive one-on-one discussion in Park City, Utah, and the conversation stretched far beyond the R2 itself. Joel said he met Scaringe at the LA Auto Show in 2018, when an interview that was supposed to last 30 minutes ran for an hour and a half.

The new interview centered on the company being built around the R2, which makes the 2027 model more than another trim in Rivian’s lineup. For a buyer, that means the company is treating this vehicle as the bridge from niche electric trucks and SUVs to a wider audience.

Georgia, service, and charging

Scaringe also discussed Rivian’s new factory in Georgia and the Rivian Adventure Network buildout. Those two pieces point to the same operational problem: Rivian cannot sell at a larger scale unless it can make more vehicles and support them after delivery.

He said scaling service was painful and did not go well out of the gate. That is the part of the roadmap that customers feel after purchase, because service delays and weak support can matter as much as the vehicle itself when a brand tries to move upmarket and broader at the same time.

R2, R4, and RAD

Joel said the R2 was launching yesterday when the episode came out, and he said the R2 is now getting into the hands of people. That puts the model at the center of Rivian’s transition from planning to actual delivery, with the car now moving from discussion to use.

Scaringe also gave a brief hint on the R4 and discussed what RAD vehicles need to be and what enthusiasts can look forward to. He also fielded questions about Porsche 911s and said, “I don’t know if I have a favorite, but that’s an interesting car for sure.”

He added, “Yeah, I have but uh, had to pick a 911, I’d probably pick a 993.” He also said, “Or Carrera 2S is pretty cool as well.” He finished the thought with, “I mean, they’re all they’re all great.”

The unresolved issue is whether Rivian can turn the R2, the Georgia factory, the charging network, and service scaling into a single operating plan that works at mass-market volume.
