Police Arrest 44-Year-Old in Putney Bridge Case

Police have arrested a 44-year-old man on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm over the arrest tied to the 5 May 2017 Putney Bridge incident in south-west London. A woman was pushed into the path of a 430 bus, and the Metropolitan police force said the case had been closed in 2018 before Monday’s arrest.

The Metropolitan police said the arrest relates to the moment when a 33-year-old woman was pushed into traffic on Putney Bridge. Oliver Salbris, the bus driver, swerved to avoid hitting her. He later said, “If I hadn’t swerved, I would have smashed her head. It was reflex. The consequences would have been terrible for her – and for me.”

Metropolitan police and Putney Bridge

A Metropolitan police spokesperson said, “The arrest relates to an incident on 5 May 2017, where a woman was pushed into the path of a bus on Putney Bridge.” Police had initially interviewed 50 men and arrested three suspects during the original inquiry. The force later closed the case in 2018, and Monday’s arrest is the first new step in the long-running investigation.

Police also said the suspect jogged back across the bridge about 15 minutes later. That detail sits at the center of the allegation because it links the bridge incident to a later sighting in the same area, while the arrest now places one named suspect back under active police scrutiny after years with no public breakthrough.

Oliver Salbris and the 430 bus

Salbris, who was driving the 430 bus, said he had to react immediately when the woman was pushed in front of the vehicle. He also said of the jogger, “to be caught and to explain himself.” The bus driver’s account remains one of the clearest first-hand descriptions of how close the woman came to being hit.

The case had already entered public culture through the play Once Upon a Bridge, which opened in 2024. At that time, Sonya Kelly said, “The footage is clear. If he was, say, my cousin, I would know him. So if there is somebody watching the play, thinking they have more information, I hope they will come forward.”

West London Arrest

The arrest was reportedly made at the man’s £1.4m home in west London. That is the clearest operational development for anyone following the case: police have moved from a closed file to a fresh arrest in a matter that had been unresolved for years, and the public record now turns on what prosecutors or police say next about the attempted grievous bodily harm allegation.
