Cherki Man City rise continues with 22-year-old’s standout season
Rayan Cherki has turned his cherki man city debut season into something more than a promising start. The 22-year-old midfielder has won Pep Guardiola’s trust, become more important as the campaign went on and reached this summer’s World Cup with France.
His rise has carried a clear edge. Cherki has produced great goals, rabona assists and cup final keepie-uppies, and he said he “plays to put a smile on fans' faces.” That mix of end product and personality has helped him capture the hearts of City fans while making him one of the club’s most influential players.
Guardiola’s trust in Cherki
By the end of the season, Cherki had become something of a joker in the first-team dressing room and was well-liked and respected by his teammates. More importantly for City, he had earned the complete trust of Guardiola, a sign that his influence had moved beyond isolated flashes and into the regular flow of the team.
That development fits the way his season unfolded. Cherki was not just a highlight-reel player; he became more important and influential over the course of the campaign, which is why his debut year stood out inside a squad that asked for more than flair alone. The work he put in helped push that transition.
Rongoni on Cherki’s work
Paolo Rongoni worked with Cherki at Lyon, when he was head of strength and conditioning and the midfielder was taking his first steps in the first team. Rongoni spoke to him two years ago about the possibility of playing for Algeria, and he said: “I had a small conversation two years ago because I hoped he might come in and play for Algeria but unfortunately he chose another cap.”
Rongoni’s view of him was blunt and warm at the same time. “He was very kind when we spoke,” he said. “He is a good person, a funny person but a really good person.” On the training side, he added: “I can say Rayan doesn't like work” and “But he is a worker and with me he was a worker.”
He also described the young Cherki as a player who preferred the ball to the gym. “He is a football player, he doesn't like to stay in the gym or run, like every player,” Rongoni said. “I think his success was his work, he just missed the football sense but today he has it.”
France, Algeria and the World Cup
Cherki has Algerian heritage, had already been capped by France at youth level and made his senior debut for Didier Deschamps’ side last year. This summer, he is at the World Cup with France and could light it up when they begin against Senegal on Tuesday.
Algeria start their tournament against Argentina a few hours after France play Senegal, which puts Rongoni’s old pitch in a sharper light. Cherki chose France, and his season at City has given that decision more weight: a 22-year-old who entered the club with talent has left his first year as a trusted, influential figure with a World Cup campaign ahead of him.
