Rohit Sharma Remains Very, Very Important Ahead of Second ODI

India may take the field unchanged for the second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow on Wednesday, with rohit sharma still central to the team’s plans. Sairaj Bahutule said the short series leaves little room for major selection churn after India went 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series.

“To be honest it’s such a short series, we really don’t feel that there can be too many changes made,” Bahutule said at the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. He added that India would still need to settle its combination after checking the pitch and weighing the hotter conditions in Lucknow against what it faced in Dharamsala.

Bahutule on Rohit Sharma

Bahutule’s clearest message centered on Rohit Sharma, who was run out for 16 off 16 balls in the first ODI. He said the 39-year-old adds value through experience and leadership, with that influence reaching Shubman Gill as well.

“Rohit is definitely an experienced player,” Bahutule said. “He is a champion cricketer.” He then added, “He is somebody who adds value to this team with his experience, not only batting-wise but his leadership qualities also rubs (off) on to all the boys, including Shubman (Gill).”

Lucknow Pitch Decision

Selection in Lucknow is still tied to the surface. Bahutule said, “I think we still have to have a look at the pitch. We’ll have a look at the pitch and then decide and take a call what our combination is going to be. Definitely different conditions (here) compared to Dharamsala; much hotter.”

That leaves India with one main call before the second ODI: whether to keep the same XI that opened the series with a win, or alter the balance once the pitch is assessed. For a short three-match series, the margin for experimentation is thin, and Bahutule’s comments suggest the final choice will be made with conditions in mind rather than by rotation alone.

Rohit Sharma’s Role

Bahutule was even more direct about Rohit’s place in the side. “So I think him being in the side is definitely very, very important and he is somebody who understands what is expected from him and from the team,” he said. He also said Rohit is “just looking forward to every match” and that “all the work he is putting in is like he has just started playing.”

That fits the way Rohit has been batting since last October, when he went back to his pre-2023 World Cup template. India’s immediate question in Lucknow is not just whether the XI stays the same, but how quickly the side settles on a combination that suits the heat and the pitch while keeping its captain-opener at the center of the plan.
