Marcus Rashford’s £26m Barcelona option lapses — Man Utd News
Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona move stopped at the deadline, with man utd news now centering on the £26m option that was never taken up. He is due to revert to being a Manchester United player on 1 July, with two years left on a £325,000-a-week contract.
Barcelona miss Rashford deadline
Barcelona had agreed with Manchester United to trigger the clause and turn the loan into a permanent deal, but the deadline passed without the option being activated. That leaves Rashford in limbo between the two clubs until the July return date arrives.
Rashford has been out on loan for the previous two seasons, and his most recent Manchester United appearance came against Viktoria Plzen on 12 December, 2024. The forward’s next step now sits back on United’s side of the ledger unless another move is arranged later.
Amorim and Carrick on Rashford
Michael Carrick said in April that no decision had been made about Rashford’s future, and he framed his stance simply: “Whoever's here, I want to work with them and help them to improve.” That line now sits alongside a very different reality, with the purchase route gone and the player set to return to Old Trafford on the first day of July.
Ruben Amorim had already pushed Rashford to the margins 12 months ago, placing him in his “bomb squad” and telling him to train at different times to the main group. United’s summer rebuilding plans have been made on the belief that he will not be part of them, even as the contract clock keeps running.
United wage pressure
The financial piece is hard to miss. Rashford still has two years left on a £325,000-a-week deal, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants wage costs brought down. United also gave Rashford’s number 10 shirt to Matheus Cunha last season, which adds another sign of where the club has been moving while the forward has been away.
Fifa’s memorandum of understanding with Fifpro, announced last week, adds a separate layer to player-rights discussions, saying that any player exiled from the main group can demand to be released and to have their contracts paid up. Rashford’s situation is not the same as a straightforward first-team selection call anymore; it is now about a player whose loan path has ended, whose permanent exit did not happen, and whose return date is already set.
