Latest News: Bomb disposal team called to Kenilworth Castle after object found

Warwickshire Police called in Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts to Kenilworth Castle on Thursday afternoon after a member of the team found an unidentified object outside the castle walls. The area was cordoned off for safety while the specialists were on their way, then cleared later in the evening when police said the item was not suspicious.

The response briefly disrupted access at one of Warwickshire’s best-known historic sites. Nearby roads were shut, locals were told to stay away and police alerted residents at around 6pm as officers kept watch around the 12th Century castle.

That swift change in tone is what made the incident stand out: an object serious enough to trigger a bomb disposal response turned out to be harmless. Police removed the cordon and left the site once they were satisfied there was no risk, ending the alert the same evening it began.

Kenilworth Castle has seen upheaval before. It dates from the 12th Century and was at the heart of one of the longest sieges in medieval history in 1266, but this latest disruption was short-lived. The brief shutdown showed how quickly an historic landmark can be pulled into an emergency response, even when the concern fades just as fast.

For visitors and nearby residents, the immediate question has already been answered: the object was not dangerous, and no further action is expected after police left the site. What remains open is what the object was in the first place, a detail police did not identify before clearing the area.
