Lamine Yamal opens Olmo scoring as Spain lead Saudi Arabia

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring on his first start of the tournament, and Spain moved into control of their FIFA World Cup Group H match against Saudi Arabia. The goal came in a live update from Atlanta Stadium, where Spain were already chasing a response after drawing their opening game.

Dani Olmo was part of the move that led to the opener, with a corner eventually reaching him before the ball was worked into the box. Mikel Oyarzabal then doubled Spain's lead, and Spain added a third goal shortly after, turning the game quickly in their favour.

Atlanta Stadium crowd

Elizabeth Conway said from Atlanta Stadium: "This stadium has just erupted with noise." She added: "The Spain fans are jumping in their seats, waving their flags and cheering with joy."

Her live description captured the change in mood after the first goal. Conway also said: "This is the Spain they wanted to see."

Saudi Arabia under pressure

Ian Dennis, commentating from Atlanta Stadium, described the match as one-sided after Spain's opener. "This is going to be a difficult game for Saudi Arabia as they're being swamped," he said.

That pressure showed in the next passages of play. Ali Lajami made a recovery challenge when Oyarzabal looked to square the ball to Yamal, and Mohammed Al Owais pushed away a long-range effort from Oyarzabal before Spain kept piling on attacks.

Spain and Saudi Arabia

The sequence before the goals also mattered. Yamal's corner was headed clear to Olmo, who fired the ball back into the box, Aymeric Laporte flicked it on, and Oyarzabal converted on the goal-line. On another attack, Oyarzabal ran on to a through ball from Alex Baena and stabbed the ball past Al Owais, but Saudi Arabia cleared it.

Conway summed up the scoring burst by saying, "Spain double their lead, but it's a scrapy one!" For Saudi Arabia, the practical problem was immediate: Spain were already ahead, were adding chances, and had turned a level contest into a chase inside Group H.
