Tim Hortons closes Weston-super-mare branch, Somerset site shuts permanently

Tim Hortons has shut its Weston-super-Mare restaurant on Weston Links, and the site is now listed as permanently closed. The branch, near Winterstoke Road, was Somerset’s only location and closed without prior announcement.

A visitor said in a local Facebook group: “Just went to go for a milkshake and it's unexpectedly shut down.” The Weston Links site opened on February 17, 2022 as the Canadian chain’s first restaurant and drive-thru in Somerset, serving doughnuts, breakfast items and coffees.

Kevin Hydes and the Weston opening

Before the branch opened, Kevin Hydes, then chief commercial officer of Tim Hortons UK, said: “We’re really excited to be welcoming people from this region. It’s the first one in Somerset, and probably the furthest western site that we have.” He also said: “We’ve got lots of fans in the area, there’s been a lot of noise about Tim Hortons coming to town”.

The closure leaves that early promise in contrast with the site’s current status. The Weston-super-Mare restaurant has been removed from Tim Hortons’ official list of locations, which means customers in Somerset no longer have a local branch to visit at Weston Links.

Tim Hortons in Somerset and Glasgow

Tim Hortons opened its first UK restaurant in Glasgow in 2017, after already building a presence through self-service counters in Spar stores from 2007. Founded by Canadian NHL player Tim Horton, the company opened its first store in Ontario in 1964.

For customers who went to Weston Links expecting the usual menu, the practical change is immediate: the branch is closed and listed as permanently closed, with no prior notice attached to the shutdown. Tim Hortons has been contacted for comment on why the Somerset site closed.
