LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho resigned on Sunday night, ending his four-year tenure while an FBI investigation continues. The Los Angeles Unified School District now has Andrés Chait as acting superintendent until the post is permanently filled.
Carvalho’s resignation letter, addressed to students, families, teachers, staff and the community, said, “It has been a great honor to serve you,” and added, “Over the past four years, together, we have made historic progress - gains that belong to our students, our educators, staff and our communities.”
Feb. 27 leave
The Board of Education voted unanimously on Feb. 27 to place him on leave pending the outcome of the probe. Nearly four months later, the district received his letter of resignation.
That span matters for the district’s day-to-day leadership. Chait stays in charge for now, so the superintendent’s office continues operating while the permanent appointment remains open.
FBI search warrants
The FBI served search warrants at Carvalho’s home and the LAUSD headquarters nearly four months before the resignation. The FBI also searched a third location near Miami. Carvalho became superintendent for Los Angeles in 2022 and previously led the public schools in Miami.
In 2024, Carvalho touted a deal with AllHere for an AI chatbot named Ed. The district paid AllHere $3 million before dropping its dealings with the company about three months after unveiling the technology, and AllHere later collapsed into bankruptcy.
Carvalho and AllHere
AllHere founder Joanna Smith-Griffin was later charged with securities fraud, wire fraud and identity theft. Carvalho denied personal involvement in the selection of AllHere at the time, and a March statement from his spokesperson said, “Mr. Carvalho remains confident that the evidence will ultimately demonstrate that he acted appropriately and in the best interests of students.”
The same statement added, “We hope the school board reinstates him promptly to his position as superintendent.” It also said, “Mr. Carvalho respects the rule of law and the investigative process and has always acted in the best interests of students and within the bounds of the law.”
No charges have been filed against Carvalho. The unresolved issue is the scope of the FBI investigation, which now sits over a district that has changed leadership but not settled the case around its former superintendent.
