Mike Boynton Jr. Takes Interim Michigan Role as Aday Mara Waits

Aday Mara sits in the background of a coaching move that shifts Michigan immediately: Mike Boynton Jr. was named head coach in an interim capacity on Tuesday. The change gives Michigan a new voice while Dusty May has headed to the Dallas Mavericks, with summer workouts starting this week.

Boynton’s Oklahoma State Record

Boynton brings prior head coaching experience to the job. He coached at Oklahoma State and went 119-109 there, a record that gives Michigan a temporary leader with a full head coaching track record rather than a first-time fill-in.

Warde Manuel tied the timing to the calendar and the team’s on-court work. “With summer workouts starting this week, Mike Boynton has been appointed head coach in an interim capacity,” he said. Manuel added, “Mike has been an invaluable member of our staff and a respected leader throughout his career.”

Michigan’s Transition Window

That matters because the move is not framed as a permanent hire. Michigan is handing the program to Boynton for the transition, but the question of whether he will coach Michigan in 2026-27 is still hanging over the appointment.

Manuel’s full explanation points to the same balancing act. “He knows what Michigan Basketball represents and has earned the trust and respect of our student-athletes and everyone in our program,” he said. “His experience, character, and commitment to our values make him the right person to guide the team during this transition.”

Interim Role, Larger Decision

The setup leaves Michigan with a short-term answer and a longer decision still ahead. Boynton has the seat now, and his prior head coaching work gives the staff a steadier hand while the program sorts out what comes next for 2026-27.

The temporary nature of the move is the sharp edge in this story. Michigan has chosen continuity for summer workouts, but it has not yet turned that choice into a permanent answer for the roster, the staff, or Boynton himself.
