Trump Cancels Signing Of Housing Bill Over SAVE America Act

Trump cancels signing of housing bill on June 24, 2026, after pulling a planned Capitol ceremony for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. He said he would not sign the measure until lawmakers pass the SAVE America Act.

The housing bill had already cleared Congress by wide bipartisan margins, putting it on the final stretch before it could become law. House Speaker Mike Johnson said Trump has a 10-day window to act on a bill and will use part of it.

Capitol ceremony canceled

Trump wrote that “Today's Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had advertised the signing as recently as Tuesday night, before the cancellation.

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act had moved through both chambers, with the House approving it Tuesday evening after the Senate passed it. The measure is described as the most comprehensive housing legislation in decades, and it aims to increase housing supply while limiting institutional investors from purchasing certain single-family homes.

Johnson and Thune respond

Johnson told reporters on Wednesday, “He has a window of time before he has to sign a bill, and he's going to use a little bit more of that window of time.” He added, “He'll do it within that 10-day window.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said the cancellation was “his call to make.” Thune called the housing bill a “great piece of legislation” and said, “It's an affordability issue, and eventually I hope he'll find his way to sign it.”

Bacon on Trump’s reversal

Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska told CBS News, “He's fixated on the SAVE Act that we passed three times out of the House.” He also said, “He strongly endorsed the housing bill a month ago, so the criticisms now are strange.”

Trump had earlier written that the Elizabeth “Pocahontas” Warren centric housing bill “is of minor importance compared to lower interest rates, and even FISA, pales in comparison to passing THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.” Trump and his allies in Congress have demanded that the Senate take up the SAVE America Act, while Republican leaders in the upper chamber have said they do not have the votes to pass it or change Senate rules to force it through.

The housing bill now sits inside Trump’s 10-day signing window, but he has tied his signature to movement on the SAVE America Act. If the Senate does not change course, the bill remains in Trump’s hands during the period Johnson described.
