Fbi searches Jeffrey Maddrey Queens home in NYPD probe

FBI agents and the NYPD searched Jeffrey Maddrey’s Queens home on Wednesday morning as part of a corruption investigation into current and former police executives. James McCarthy was placed on modified duty, and no one was expected to be arrested Wednesday.

The investigation is looking at promotions and assignments, including how they were carried out. Jessica Tisch said members of the NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau and the FBI executed search warrants as part of a criminal investigation being pursued by the NYPD, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

Jeffrey Maddrey and Queens

Maddrey formerly served as Chief of Department, the highest ranking uniformed officer. FBI agents and the NYPD were also spotted outside his Queens home, which had already been searched in January 2025 amid an overtime abuse investigation.

That earlier search makes Wednesday’s operation more than a one-day sweep. It ties the current case to an earlier review of conduct inside the NYPD and shows investigators have returned to the same location while widening the scope to former and current members of the department.

The search operation also targeted McCarthy, the current Chief of Manhattan South, and Tarik Sheppard, the department’s former chief spokesman. McCarthy was placed on modified duty as the investigation moved forward.

Tisch said the investigation is ongoing and concerns conduct by former and current members of the NYPD. In her statement, she said: "This morning, members of the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau and the FBI executed search warrants as part of a criminal investigation being pursued by the NYPD, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. The investigation is ongoing and concerns conduct by former and current members of the NYPD."

Jessica Tisch and New Yorkers

Tisch also said: "When I became Police Commissioner, I promised New Yorkers that under my leadership the NYPD would conduct itself with integrity and that there would be a thorough investigation of any claim that members of service failed to meet that standard. This investigation and our actions this morning are part of the ongoing effort to fulfill that commitment and hold the Department to its highest ideals." Zohran Mamdani said: "Commissioner Tisch has already shown a real commitment to cracking down on corruption and ensuring that the public servants in the NYPD are held to the highest standards. I am confident that she will lead us through this process."

For now, the practical consequence is limited to a widening internal and federal inquiry rather than arrests. The unresolved issue is the conduct behind the promotions and assignments now under scrutiny, and that is the part that will determine whether the case stays administrative or turns into something larger.
