Liam Cooper Signs New One-Year Deal With Sheffield Wednesday

Liam Cooper has signed a new one-year contract to return to Sheffield Wednesday for the forthcoming season. The 34-year-old defender will be part of the club’s rebuild in League One after relegation from the Championship.

Cooper’s return to Wednesday

He first arrived from CSKA Sofia on a short-term deal last November, then played 14 games as Sheffield Wednesday went down from the Championship. Now he stays for another year, giving the club an experienced defender as it resets at Hillsborough under new ownership.

Cooper said, “It's a new era for Sheffield Wednesday and one I'm absolutely delighted to be part of,” and added, “I can't tell you how delighted I am to be here – we can look forward now with the right people in the right roles – it's really exciting.”

Simon Wilson on Cooper

Simon Wilson said Cooper “made a big impact in the dressing room last season,” calling him “a leader in difficult circumstances, providing guidance and mentorship to a young group, and he is the type of player who represents the culture we want to create.” For a squad that is rebuilding after relegation, that kind of presence is as important as the minutes he plays.

Why the deal matters

Cooper has played over 400 games in his career and has been capped 19 times for Scotland. At 34, he is not being added as a long-term project; Sheffield Wednesday are buying reliability, authority and familiarity with the demands around the club. The unanswered part is the detail inside the one-year deal itself, but the football point is already clear: he is back, and Wednesday have kept one of the more experienced voices from last season’s group.

That leaves Sheffield Wednesday with a proven defender in place before the new campaign begins. For supporters, the move signals continuity in a summer that has already been shaped by change, and it gives the squad a senior figure who has already been through the relegation run-in.
