Fifa will allow rainbow flags and other sexual-orientation and gender-identity flags inside the stadium for Egypt vs Iran in Seattle, even after both Iran and Egypt complained about the LGBTQ+ events around the match. The decision keeps the stadium rule separate from the city’s Pride-related programming and gives the match a clear code-of-conduct line inside the venue.
Gianni Infantino said: "First of all, I must clarify that there will be no ‘Pride Match’ at the World Cup" and "There will be a Fifa World Cup match in Seattle, and on the same day, events organised by external organisations will be taking place in the city. But that has nothing to do with the match itself." Fifa said the flags are permitted under the Fifa World Cup 2026 stadium code of conduct, provided they are used in a manner consistent with that code.
Amir Ghalenoei on football
Iran’s response stayed on the pitch. Amir Ghalenoei said: "All our thoughts are focused on football, the beautiful game, our people, our success" and added, "We are only going to speak about football." He also said the team had been told when it could arrive and depart a host city and that it had been deprived of its rights.
Egypt took the same line. Hossam Hassan said: "We are all focused on football, it is all we think about and Fifa is of course taking care of the organisational side. We are concerned with football on the pitch. We respect the rules of respect and fair play that are there for everyone to abide by and any guidelines set by Fifa."
Seattle's organising committee and Pride weekend
Seattle's organising committee arranged LGBTQ+ festivities around the game to coincide with Pride weekend. That put the match into a separate public calendar from the stadium itself, where Fifa’s code now allows rainbow flags and other flags representing sexual orientation and gender identity under the stated conditions.
Iran and Egypt both complained to Fifa about those events and asked that they be cancelled. Two days before the match, Iran arrived in Seattle after its previous two Group G matches, and the team’s objections landed while the match preparations were already in motion.
The practical line for matchgoers is straightforward: the stadium code allows those flags inside the venue, while the city events tied to Pride weekend continue on the same day outside it. The remaining question is whether any further stadium or matchday limits will follow beyond that flag policy.
