Trevor Nelson is taking a little break from all work after a routine check-up led doctors to advise follow-up tests. He said he has already missed his daily Radio 2 slot this week and is now concentrating on getting better.

The 62-year-old framed the pause as a health matter, not a scheduling reshuffle. That matters for Radio 2 and Radio 1Xtra listeners because he has worked across both for 30 years and has been a steady part of Radio output.

Instagram message to listeners

“I wanted to let my followers, radio listeners and all my Soul Nation party-people know that I'm going to be taking a little break from my work commitments.” Nelson wrote on Instagram. He added that he had been off his daily Radio 2 slot this week and would be taking some further time off.

He also said: “After a routine check-up I was advised to have some follow up tests. As a result, I will be taking some further time off. As I'm sure you can appreciate with health issues, it's important to deal with facts and not speculate.”

Lorna Clarke response

Lorna Clarke, who leads music, said everyone at Radio 2 and Radio 1Xtra wishes Nelson “a very speedy recovery” and looks forward to his return “whenever he is ready.” That leaves his shows on pause for now, with the broadcaster framing the break around recovery rather than a fixed return date.

Nelson said he wants to get back “behind the mic and the decks,” but he did not spell out the reason for the tests. For listeners, the immediate read is simple: his regular airtime is off the schedule until he feels ready to come back.

30 years at the

The break comes after a busy stretch for Nelson. He celebrated 30 years at the in February, received a special prize at the Television and Radio Industries Club awards earlier this week, and has spent his career moving from Madhatter to Kiss FM in London, then to Radio 1 in 1996 with Rhythm Nation.

He also won the Best DJ award at the Mobo Awards two times and hosted that ceremony alongside Kelis and Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes. The immediate issue now is not legacy, though; it is how long the pause lasts while he follows medical advice and gets back to full strength.
