Thomas Tuchel Gets England Ready for Panama — Who Will England Play In The Round Of 32?

England are through to the last 32 before they face Panama in New York at 22:00 BST, and the knockout picture still turns on the remaining group results. Who will England play in the round of 32? As things stand, Senegal are set to meet Thomas Tuchel's side, but that could change.

Tuchel said everyone except Reece James is available and ready to go. He also said he will take the decision tonight, leaving England with a clean choice elsewhere and one obvious absence at right back.

Reece James misses Panama

James will miss the Panama match because of a minor hamstring issue. Tuchel said he was not able to train for the last two days and is now in an accelerated rehabilitation programme.

The England manager also said the team strongly believe James will be available for the tournament. That gives the injury a different weight: it removes him for Panama, but not from the wider World Cup 2026 picture.

Rice and Anderson train

Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson were both in full training the day before the match. Tuchel said both had minor issues after the previous game, but they trained and are part of the available group.

Tuchel also pointed to the wider defensive reshuffle. He said Trevoh Chalobah was called up to free up Jarrel Quansah on the right full-back position, and added that Djed Spence is a decent right back. On Quansah, he said he had seen him very strong playing that position for Liverpool and in a back three for Leverkusen.

Senegal or DR Congo

The bracket still has a moving part. If England win their group and DR Congo qualify in third, they will meet in the last 32. If that chain does not fall into place, Senegal stay on course to face Tuchel's side as things stand.

Tuchel said Panama will be a difficult match against a team that is so difficult to break down, with only two shots on target allowed against Croatia. Spain, Belgium, Egypt and Cape Verde have already reached the last 32, so England's place is secure even though the exact opponent is not.

The practical answer for England is simple: the job now is Panama, then the bracket sorts itself out. The match in New York comes at 22:00 BST, and the round-of-32 path will be settled by the rest of the group results, with Senegal the current opponent and DR Congo the route that could change it.
