England vs Panama World Cup 2026 has split the day in two ways: England are through to the knockout stage, while Panama are still chasing their first World Cup point. On the 16th and final day of the group stage, that contrast now defines both teams.
Thomas Christiansen’s Panama have gone down narrowly to Ghana and Croatia, which is why the point column still reads zero. They have shown enough in those defeats to stay in the conversation, but not enough to turn that into a result.
England’s old core remains
Four players from England’s starting XI in Nizhny Novgorod are still around: Pickford, Stones, Henderson and Kane. That 2018 side beat Panama 6-1, with Kane scoring three goals, Stones two and Lingard one. The names have changed little at the top of the spine.
The rest of that XI was Walker, Maguire, Trippier, Loftus-Cheek, Lingard, Young and Sterling alongside the four still involved now. It is a familiar backbone for England as the tournament moves into the knockout stage, starting tomorrow with Canada v South Africa.
Panama and Christiansen
Panama’s side has also carried familiar pieces from that 2018 meeting, including Michael Murillo, Yoel Bárcenas and José Luis Rodríguez. José Córdoba is part of the stronger group Christiansen has assembled, and the performances against Ghana and Croatia suggest the side is not being overwhelmed, even if the table does not yet reward them.
That is the contradiction in Panama’s campaign. They have given a good account of themselves and still have nothing to show for it in the World Cup. England move on with certainty; Panama are left with the harder task of turning narrow defeats into a first point before the tournament closes on them.
