LeBron James sparks Lakers contingency plans before Tuesday 6 p.m. ET — Lebron Leaving The Lakers

LeBron leaving the Lakers is no longer just a rumor. The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing contingency plans if LeBron James does not re-sign or give them a timely answer before Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.

James, 41, is set to become a free agent when the negotiating period begins. He has spent the past eight seasons with the Lakers, so the decision lands as a roster turn, not a routine contract check-in.

Vincent Goodwill on Get Up

Vincent Goodwill said the Lakers have already reached out to a few agents and told them they would contact them about their clients if they do not get an answer. The target pool centers on players who fill James’s position, which is the cleanest way for the Lakers to keep their roster structure intact if he walks away.

That approach gives Los Angeles a path that does not depend on a single answer arriving on time. It also keeps other roster moves from sitting idle while the free-agent clock keeps moving.

Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective

Brian Windhorst added a different layer on Monday. He said there have been no further talks between James and the Lakers, that the Lakers have not made an offer, and that James has not made himself available to meet with them yet.

Windhorst also said the No. 1 thing for LeBron next season is happiness, not money. That line matters because it changes the frame from simple dollars and years to fit, timing, and where he wants to spend the rest of his career.

Warriors, Davis, and Lakers options

Marc J. Spears said two weeks ago that he had been hearing James was likely to re-sign with the Lakers. Monday’s update from Windhorst complicated that picture, and it came on the same day Draymond Green declined his $27.6 million player option for 2026-27, giving the Warriors flexibility to potentially pursue James.

Shams Charania also reported that the Warriors could try to acquire Anthony Davis in a trade with the Washington Wizards. James and Stephen Curry led USA to a gold medal during the 2024 Summer Olympics, which keeps that possible fit in the conversation if James leaves Los Angeles.

The Lakers are not left empty-handed if the answer goes the other way. Luka Dončić is signed through at least 2028, and Austin Reaves is signed through at least 2029 after a four-year, $184.8 million extension, so any James decision would reshape the rest of the market around a core that is already in place.

By Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, the Lakers need clarity or a backup plan becomes the plan. LeBron James now controls whether Los Angeles keeps building around him or starts moving on without him.
