Tobias Harris is set to meet with five opposing teams when free agency opens after the Pistons were unable to reach a deal with him during their exclusive negotiating window. Detroit still wants to re-sign him, but the next step now belongs to Harris and the five teams waiting to speak with him.
Harris and the Pistons
The timing points to a fast-moving decision. Harris turns 34 next month, and he remains a real piece of the Pistons’ roster picture after signing a two-year, $52MM contract with them in the 2024 offseason.
His production gives the Pistons a reason to keep pushing. Harris averaged 13.3 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.5 APG and 0.9 SPG on.469/.368/.866 shooting in 27.7 MPG across 63 regular season appearances in 2025/26, then finished as the Pistons’ second-leading scorer in the playoffs.
Early Bird rights for Detroit
Detroit holds Harris’ Early Bird rights, which gives the Pistons a stronger financial path than most teams if they want to stay aggressive. That matters because the market opening for Harris is not just about interest; it is also about which team can match the contract structure Detroit can offer.
J.B. Bickerstaff’s view of Harris has been clear for months. In March, he said, “He’s always there when we need him” and added, “That’s the greatest compliment you can give to a guy No matter the situation, no matter time, score – the play that needs to be made, Tobias has over and over again made that play…I’ve called him my safety blanket for a year and a half now. And that’s what he is for me and this team.”
Five-team free-agency meetings
The immediate question is which five teams will get the meetings, because that group now sets the early shape of Harris’ market. Marc Stein and Jake Fischer previously identified the Spurs as a possible suitor, and a source told Sam Amick of The Athletic about the five-team plan.
For Detroit, the issue is simple: the Pistons want Harris back, but they did not finish the deal during the exclusive window. For Harris, free agency now becomes a short list of real choices, with one veteran forward weighing the strongest contract path against a role he already knows well.
