Justin Holl signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Capitals on Wednesday, giving him a new NHL home after most of the 2025-26 campaign was spent in the minors. The move puts him back in position to compete for an NHL role instead of sitting in the margin between leagues.
Capitals add Holl for one year
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported the contract, which runs for one year and carries a $900,000 salary. For Washington, the move is a low-risk add on a player who has already logged substantial NHL time across six campaigns.
Holl averaged 63.8 regular-season NHL appearances across those previous six campaigns. That number is the sharpest contrast in the story: a player who had been a regular presence at the NHL level is now coming off a season that pushed him down a level.
AHL Grand Rapids numbers
During the 2025-26 campaign, Holl made 41 regular-season appearances for AHL Grand Rapids. He produced two goals, 12 assists and 10 PIM in those games, enough to show he stayed active while his NHL workload shrank.
Those totals give the Capitals a player whose recent season was built on minutes and repetition rather than a full NHL run. That makes the signing more than a simple depth move: it gives Holl a direct path to compete for a roster spot again, with his next step dependent on how he translates that minor-league production back to the NHL level.
Holl's NHL role
The immediate question is straightforward. Holl now has the contract and the opening, but he still has to win the role. Wednesday changed his team status; it did not hand him a spot.
