Antoine Griezmann unveiled by Orlando City with trophy target

Antoine Griezmann was officially welcomed by Orlando City on Tuesday in a showcase event that matched the size of the moment. The club has made no secret of how significant the move is, presenting the 35-year-old forward as a centerpiece of its push to compete for trophies.

Griezmann arrived with a resume that gives the signing immediate weight. He helped France reach the 2016 Euro final, won the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and spent a decade-plus at Atlético Madrid before ending that spell earlier this year. For Orlando City, that kind of background is exactly why this move is being treated as one of the biggest in club history.

Griezmann’s goal is simple

At his introduction, Griezmann made the message clear. “Here I am, very eager, and my goal is to win a trophy and make the whole city happy,” he said. He also promised to “give my absolute best, my 1000%, for this team, for these colors, and in the end the ball comes first.”

That is the kind of language Orlando City wanted from a player expected to bring quality and ambition in equal measure. The club has framed his arrival in the same broad significance as Kaká’s move in 2015, when he arrived to help launch Orlando City into MLS.

Why Orlando City appealed to him

Griezmann said the move had been a long time coming. He described MLS as a dream dating back to when he was 18 and said American culture had long drawn him in. He even pointed to “24-hour trips” he has taken to watch NFL or NBA games, which only added to his interest in living and competing in the United States.

He also said he wanted to arrive in good physical and mental shape and believes he is ready to contribute right away. Griezmann said he has already been training with his new teammates, which should help the transition as Orlando City works him into the group.

A move shaped by a personal connection

Part of what strengthened Griezmann’s interest in Orlando City was a conversation with club owner Mark Wilf. Griezmann said Wilf traveled to his house in Madrid, and that the gesture had a major effect on him. He called it a wonderful surprise and said that after the talk, his affection for Orlando and his desire to join the club grew quickly.

He said the day after that meeting, he told his sister he wanted to do whatever it took to come to the United States and MLS. Griezmann also praised the technical level he saw around the club, saying it was “quite, very good,” and added that the welcome has been incredible for him and his family.

Orlando City is banking on that combination of pedigree, fit and motivation. If Griezmann delivers the way the club hopes, Tuesday’s unveiling could end up being remembered as the moment Orlando City signaled it wanted to compete at the very top.
