Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match ban by Fifa after being sent off in England’s World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico, a ruling that immediately affects Thomas Tuchel’s selection plans for the knockout rounds.
Quansah was shown a red card in the 54th minute after a challenge on Jesús Gallardo, and Fifa later confirmed the punishment on Thursday. Because this is a knockout tournament, the suspension is significant: England are due to play Norway in the quarter-final in Miami on Saturday, and Quansah could also miss a potential semi-final.
The ban arrives at a difficult time for England, with Thomas Tuchel already managing issues at right-back, centre-back and midfield. There is no right of appeal against a red card at this tournament, so the decision is final.
What Fifa decided
Fifa’s ruling means Quansah will sit out two matches. At a minimum, that removes him from the quarter-final against Norway, and depending on England’s progress, he would also be unavailable for the next round.
The situation leaves England with another selection problem as the tournament enters its most important stage. Marc Guéhi may train on Friday as he tries to recover from a hamstring problem, which at least gives Tuchel a possible boost in defence. But for now, England have to prepare for Norway without Quansah and with limited room for error.
Bukayo Saka said he had only just learned of the sanction and described it as “very frustrating,” while adding that the team has to “deal with it, adapt and get ready.” Nico O’Reilly also said he was gutted for Quansah, but noted that the decision has now been made and the defender has accepted it.
For England, the immediate issue is simple: Quansah is out, and the knock-on effect could last beyond the quarter-final.
