England could get a Bank Holiday if they win the World Cup, Keir Starmer hints

Keir Starmer has hinted that England could be rewarded with an extra bank holiday if they win the World Cup, while making clear he does not want to tempt fate before the knockout run is complete.

The prime minister’s remarks come with Thomas Tuchel’s side due to face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday night, before the tournament moves on to the semi-final stage and, if England keep winning, the final in New Jersey on Sunday 19 July. It is only then that the speculation around a day off would become real.

Starmer was asked about the possibility and kept his answer deliberately cautious. He said: “On the question of a bank holiday, I think I don't want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final.”

When would the Bank Holiday come?

If England do go all the way and lift the trophy, the extra bank holiday would be expected on Friday 24 July. That would come the day after the prime minister is widely expected to step down and be replaced by Andy Burnham, although his departure could be briefly delayed if he attends the final.

For now, the message is simple: England still have to get through Norway, then manage the pressure of the semi-final and final before anyone starts planning a celebration. But Starmer has at least left the door open, and in a summer defined by England World Cup hopes, that is enough to keep the discussion alive.
