An Anne Arundel County woman claimed a $50,030 MD lottery Bonus Match 5 prize after her son turned the news into a birthday card in June. She said the numbers “just felt right,” and she later used her prize claim on July 7 to lock in the win.

Glen Burnie ticket pickup

The winning ticket was bought in May after she picked random numbers for Bonus Match 5 and the Pick 3 and Pick 4 games. Her son went to Giant in Glen Burnie to pick up her tickets, then checked them the next day and saw that she had matched the five numbers drawn on May 18 for a $50,000 prize.

That same ticket also produced $30 more, with three numbers matched on two other lines for $15 each. The total reached $50,030 before the birthday reveal ever happened.

Birthday card surprise

Her son wrote, “You won $50,000,” inside a birthday card and gave it to her on the morning of her birthday in June. When he later described the moment, he said, “I sat there looking at that ticket and knew right away I was going to surprise her on her birthday in June,” after holding the ticket until then.

She said, “I tried to keep calm, because of health reasons, but I was so excited,” and added, “I didn’t want to do cartwheels and stuff.” She also called her son the “ticket keeper and security guard,” a role that mattered because he already knew about the prize the day after he checked the ticket.

July 7 claim

She claimed the prize on July 7 and said she plans to use the winnings to purchase a new car. Her choice to hold the ticket through June turned a routine Bonus Match 5 win into a delayed family reveal, with the prize money now set aside for a specific purchase.

The Giant Store at 7940 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie receives a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize winning ticket.
