Craig Melvin said andrew truelove was taken into custody after a man entered an unauthorized area near Studio 1A at 30 Rockefeller Center in Manhattan. The 40-year-old New York man now faces burglary, menacing and criminal trespass as hate crimes, along with harassment.
Craig Melvin and Studio 1A
Melvin notified security after the man approached him in the vestibule near Studio 1A, NBC News said. Security held the man until police arrived on Thursday morning inside 30 Rockefeller Center in Midtown.
On-air Friday morning, Melvin said, “Unfortunately, an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A.” He added, “Thankfully, he was apprehended quickly.” Melvin also said, “He was placed under arrest.”
30 Rockefeller Center arrest
Police records show the man was arrested Thursday morning by an officer responding to reports of a disorderly individual inside the building. No altercation occurred and no injuries were reported. NBC did not say how he gained access to the area.
The charge list matters for the case that will follow, because burglary, menacing and criminal trespass were all filed as hate crimes. Police did not say what led to the hate-crime enhancements, leaving the basis for that decision out of the record they released.
Wednesday court date
Melvin posted on Thursday that he was doing just fine, writing, “Hey everyone. I’ve heard from so many of you over the last few hours” and “I’m doing just fine.” He ended the message with, “Thanks for reaching out.”
Al Roker later posted, “We are both okay,” and wrote, “It’s moments like these that serve to pull us together.” He also said, “You all, like Craig, said ‘You come after one of us, you come after all of us.’” Police records show the next court date has been scheduled for Wednesday.
