Snapchat is rolling out Now Playing on Snap Map, a feature that lets users share what they are listening to in real time through Spotify. For people who already use Snap Map to check in on friends, the app is turning that space into a music-discovery feed with stricter controls than a public profile post.
Manny Adler, Snapchat’s head of music, said in an emailed statement that Now Playing in Snap Map adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know. He also said music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer.
Spotify starts the rollout
The feature begins with Spotify, and users can link their streaming account to share the songs they are currently playing. Friends can see those songs, but the sharing does not expose a full listening archive. Snapchat says it will not show a user’s last-played song or listening history, which keeps the feature closer to a live status update than a music log.
Snap Map, which launched in 2017, already reaches more than 450 million monthly users. It started as a way to see friends’ locations and browse public Snaps from around the world, and this new layer pushes it further into music discovery without changing the basic rule: users choose who can see their listening activity.
24-hour sharing limits
Sharing stays active as long as a user has opened Snapchat within the past 24 hours. If the app sits unused for more than 24 hours, sharing pauses automatically, then resumes when Snapchat opens again. Users can also pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely, giving them a quick way to control who sees what they are playing.
That built-in cutoff matters because real-time sharing can fade fast if the app is not opened. The feature is rolling out in regions where Spotify and Snapchat are both available, and Canada is coming soon, so availability will depend on where both services already operate rather than on a single global switch.
Canada and the rollout
TechCrunch reported the rollout on 2026-07-27, tying the launch to a broader push to make Snap Map more useful than a location layer alone. Snapchat has been adding music discovery to the product in pieces, including integration with Spotlight videos and a way to save songs from a Spotlight video directly to Spotify or by visiting a track’s page on the platform.
For users, the practical takeaway is straightforward: connect Spotify, choose who can view the activity, and expect sharing to stop if Snapchat goes unopened for more than 24 hours. Canada is next in line, which puts the rollout on a regional schedule rather than a single app-wide debut.
