Verdi's in Mumbles was hit by a Verdis Cafe fire overnight, forcing the cafe to shut after smoke, water and roof damage spread beyond the kitchen and toilet area. Ryan Hole said the family would work to reopen it as soon as possible, but the cafe will stay closed for the time being.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue was called shortly after 2am on Thursday and multiple crews attended the blaze. The fire service said it was contained to the kitchen and toilet area, yet the main seating area still suffered smoke and water damage, while parts of the roof were also damaged.

Hole, who is part of the family that runs Verdi's, said the cafe went up in flames overnight and called the timing especially hard because it was in the middle of the busiest season. He said the family was working to get the cafe back open and “open and back to its brilliant best as soon as possible.”
He also said, “We are not sure of the extent of the damage at the moment, so we don't know what that timeline will look like.” That leaves the family with a practical first step: assess the full damage before any repair timetable can be set.
Elaine Conners in Mumbles
Regulars arrived on Thursday morning to find the cafe closed for breakfast service. Elaine Conners, who comes with Bernard Conners from Killay, said, “We come almost every other day at least. We’re very disappointed today, and it looks like it’s going to take a while to repair. I don’t know where we’ll go instead, we love it there. It’s very sad.”
Angela Lang, another customer, said, “It’s really sad, normally it is very busy here. I imagine it will take a while to get it back up and running. We come once a week, because we love it down here. It’s very sad.” Their reactions show how quickly the closure affects people who use the cafe as part of their routine, not just as a one-off stop.
Smoke and roof damage
The fire was described as limited in one sense and wider in another: the flames were contained to the kitchen and toilet area, but the seating area and parts of the roof still took smoke, water and structural damage. That mix will shape the repair work, because the visible burn area is not the only part that has to be checked before Verdi's can reopen safely.
For customers, the immediate change is simple: the cafe is shut while the family assesses the damage and works out what can be repaired first. For now, the open question is how long Verdi's will remain closed while that assessment is carried out.
