Thousands of Monzo Bank users hit app problems today as the bank said it was dealing with a technical issue and had shifted to Monzo Stand-In. Some customers could still check balances and use cards, but many said transfers were not going through.
Monzo Stand-In and app access
When users logged in, they saw the message: ‘We’re experiencing issues. We’ll let you know when they’re resolved.’
The bank’s message matters because it shows the issue was inside the service, not just one customer’s phone, and the backup path was already active.
A Monzo spokesperson said the bank was working to resolve the problem as soon as possible.
Transfers versus normal app use
The same spokesperson said customers could still do most things on their Monzo app, including sending bank transfers and making card payments and ATM withdrawals.
That is where the outage became messy for users. Many Monzo users said they could not transfer money, even as the bank said transfer functions were available for most customers.
For a banking app, that split matters more than a full outage because it leaves people able to check money and pay in some cases, while a core movement of funds may still fail at the moment they need it.
DownDetector shows wider strain
DownDetector showed a sharp increase in outage reports for both Monzo and Santander.
Santander users saw a screen reading ‘Santander UK isn’t responding.’
For anyone trying to move money today, the practical step is simple: try the app again later and avoid assuming a transfer has gone through until the app shows it has. The unresolved question is how long Monzo Stand-In will need before normal app service is restored.
