Hugh Johnston says Hulu Live Tv is coming to Disney+ app

Hulu Live TV is one of the near-term changes Disney is now pointing to inside the Disney+ app. Hugh Johnston said the plan is part of a broader move to pull Hulu features deeper into Disney+, giving subscribers a tighter one app experience.

Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference

During the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, Johnston said Disney has already built a one fan, one account ecosystem by linking Hulu profiles and Disney+ profiles. He also said the company wants to drive engagement, reduce churn and increase the fandom, adding that members who use live TV tend to churn less.

Johnston’s specific line was direct: “the things you will likely see are live TV on the Disney+ app.” That places live TV alongside Hulu add-ons and bundles as the next layer of integration, rather than as a separate service decision. Disney is treating the app as the main surface, not just a doorway to separate streaming products.

Hulu On Disney+

Over the last few years, Disney has been slowly blurring the lines between Disney+ and Hulu, and Hulu On Disney+ already lets Hulu subscribers watch titles such as Shogun and Only Murders In The Building inside Disney+. Internationally, Star has been replaced with Hulu, so the company has already moved in this direction outside the US.

That creates a useful test case for the US: if the catalog, profiles and recommendations already live together, live TV and add-ons are the final pieces that make the app feel less like two products stitched together. Johnston said Disney wants “making the recommendation engine sharper and better,” plus “a cleaner UI” so “people can watch on mobile more easily.”

Hulu add-ons and bundles

“In addition to that, we have Hulu add-ons and bundles and things like that,” Johnston said, which is the part that complicates the clean bundling story. Disney wants Hulu more deeply integrated into Disney+, but it also still sees add-ons and bundles as revenue sources worth keeping in the system.

“We have seen impact in terms of churn reduction,” Johnston said, and that is the clearest business case for pushing more of Hulu into Disney+. The nearer-term read is simple: Disney is betting that a more unified app will keep subscribers around longer, even as it tries not to give up the pricing flexibility built into Hulu add-ons and bundles.

Disney has not said when live TV on the Disney+ app will launch, and that leaves the practical question for subscribers unchanged for now: the feature is coming in direction, not in date. For viewers, the next shift is likely to be less about learning a new product and more about using one account to move between live TV, Hulu add-ons and Disney+ without switching systems.
