Johanna Faries said Blizzard Entertainment is developing Netflix shows for Diablo, putting the franchise's fantasy world on television for the first time. The announcement came during BlizzCon 2026, and it immediately sets up a new test for how far gaming IP can travel without losing what made Sanctuary work.
“We are thrilled to share that we are in development for a new animated series for Diablo with Netflix,” Faries told the BlizzCon audience, according to IGN. She also said she is a major Diablo player and loves the “indulgent darkness of Sanctuary,” which is the kind of line you only hear from someone who actually lives inside the franchise, not just around it.
BlizzCon 2026 and Diablo 5
Blizzard made the series announcement alongside the first teaser for Diablo 5, which is scheduled to arrive in 2029. That pairing matters because it shows Diablo is being pushed on two tracks at once: one aimed at future game sales, the other at television viewers who may never boot up a console or PC.
For nearly three decades, Blizzard has expanded Sanctuary through games, novels, and cinematic storytelling. Taking that world into Netflix gives the company a chance to translate its mythology into a longer-form format, the same kind of move that made Arcane a reference point for how animation can carry a game universe beyond its core audience.
Diablo story still hidden
The series still has no revealed story, no named characters, no creative team, and no release window. Netflix also has not said whether the show will follow established characters from the games or build a new story inside the franchise's mythology, so the announcement is bigger than the details available right now.
That leaves the real draw in the setup, not the rollout: Diablo is moving to television, but the audience still has to wait for the part that decides whether this becomes a faithful adaptation or a fresh branch of the IP. The most useful question now is the simplest one Faries did not answer on stage — what story and characters will the Diablo animated series actually follow?
