EA Sports FC 27’s FC27 web app preview centers on The Grounds, an open-world mode built around football culture rather than only matches on the pitch. EA Vancouver opened its doors earlier this year for hands-on gameplay of the mode, and the first space begins in The Terrace before branching out. That shift turns club play into something players can move through, not just load into.

Karthik Venkatesan and clubmates

Karthik Venkatesan said the idea started with what club communities kept asking for. “The first, easiest factor is hearing from our club’s community about how they want more ways to interact with their clubmates—to do things together, or to keep connecting even when they’re doing things separately.”

He added, “Over the last few years, they’ve repeatedly told us they just want more ways to do what they love to do.”

That matters for players who already split time between clubmates, because The Grounds is accessed through clubs and is built to keep those groups connected while they move through different activities.

The Grounds and its three districts

The Grounds starts in The Terrace and then opens into three districts named Parkside, Montclair and Zeiza. Parkside, Montclair and Zeiza are inspired by the football cultures of England, France and Argentina, and that structure gives the mode a built-in sense of place instead of one generic lobby.

The mode also includes street-inspired games such as 1v1 and Bucket and Balloon Ball. Players who want quick, smaller sessions get those formats alongside the broader social space, rather than being pushed back into full match play every time.

EA Sports FC and wider culture

Venkatesan said EA has seen people on YouTube and Twitch hacking together ways to play using club friendlies and similar workarounds, and he also pointed to the industry shift since COVID toward bigger online spaces. “The combination of people wanting that and the technology now allowing us to do”

Jean-François Guastalla is part of the project’s design leadership, and the wider setup places The Grounds inside a franchise that has evolved alongside football itself for 30 years. EA has tried adjacent ideas before with The Journey, Volta and Rush, but The Grounds pushes harder toward a social space built around culture, not just competition.

The open question is how far that structure will go in the final version, especially how the districts and mini-games will balance exploration against competitive play. For now, the preview gives players a clear idea of the layout and the social logic behind it, but not a release date or launch plan.
