Bungie Marathon delays Symbiosis to December 8, adds permanent PvE

Bungie moved Bungie Marathon’s next major update to December 8 and said the Symbiosis update will add the game’s first permanent PvE experience. The content had been planned for September 22, and Bungie will bridge the gap with a smaller update on October 6.

The December update will also bring a new Runner shell, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, an experimental TDM mode, and improvements to new player onboarding. Bungie said Symbiosis is the first major step in Marathon’s next chapter.

October 6 reset

Before that, Bungie will release a smaller update on October 6 that resets progression and the in-game economy, refreshes rewards, and improves the live game. Bungie Marathon delays September 22 update to December 8 The studio said the reset is intended to address the progression and reward issues that hit Marathon Season 2: Nightfall, where some players were pushed into the endgame while others fell behind.

That reset gives Bungie a chance to rework the live game without waiting for December. The October update also sets up Vault Breaker’s limited return after the reset, with feedback from that mode feeding into the future of PvE in Marathon.

Symbiosis on December 8

Symbiosis arrives on December 8 with the game’s first permanent PvE experience, along with a refreshed Perimeter, a social space and firing range, and an experimental TDM mode. Bungie said it will continue running gameplay experiments in the 8 weeks between October and December.

The shift also shows Bungie moving away from a strict seasonal schedule for Marathon. Instead of waiting for a single seasonal drop, players get an October reset, then a larger December update that changes how the game is delivered and how PvE in Marathon will develop.

Bungie’s March plans

Bungie said it will share how it will be evolving Marathon into a more alien and dynamic survival experience later this month. It also said that evolution will continue through March and beyond, making Symbiosis a start point rather than a finish line.

For players, the practical takeaway is simple: the September content is no longer arriving on that date, the next change lands October 6, and the larger Marathon Season update follows on December 8.
