Vanderbilt Football Schedule: 2028 road game at NC State canceled for $1 million fee

Vanderbilt’s football schedule for 2028 has taken a notable turn, with the Commodores canceling their return trip to NC State and agreeing to replace it with a home game against Virginia.

The change ends a planned home-and-home series that was set to begin at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. on Saturday, and it also means Vanderbilt will owe NC State a $1 million cancellation fee under the original contract.

Why Vanderbilt changed course

The future date removed from the Vanderbilt football schedule was Sept. 16, 2028, when the Commodores had been due to travel to Carter‑Finley Stadium. Instead, Virginia will visit Nashville on that same date, giving Vanderbilt a different non-conference challenge at home.

The matchup with NC State had been part of a series originally scheduled in 2015. The two programs have met three times overall, including the 1946 game, the 2012 Music City Bowl, and the 2016 Independence Bowl.

What NC State’s 2028 schedule looks like now

For NC State, the canceled game removes one non-conference home-and-away date from the calendar, but the Wolfpack still have road games at East Carolina and Appalachian State in 2028. That leaves their non-conference slate altered, but not emptied out.

Vanderbilt’s 2028 schedule still includes home games against Tennessee State and Akron, so the change does not create a gap in the season so much as it reshapes the balance of opponents. The Commodores also remain scheduled to travel to Charlottesville in 2031.

For both Vanderbilt and NC State, the adjustment is a reminder that future schedules can change well before kickoff. In this case, the headline is simple: Vanderbilt has traded a road trip to NC State for a home date with Virginia, and the price of that decision is $1 million.
