2017 and the long run
Leith joined The Great British Bake Off as a judge in 2017 alongside Paul Hollywood. Her exit ends a run that stretched across nine years and more than 400 challenges, which is a substantial handover for a show built on continuity at the judging table.
She framed the decision in practical terms. “Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life for the last nine years, I have genuinely loved it and I’m sure I’ll miss working with my fellow judge Paul, Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding and the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4.”
Madagascar and summer filming
Leith said the pressure point was time. “But now feels like the right time to step back (I’m 86 for goodness sake!), there’s so much I’d like to do, not least spend summers enjoying my garden.” She also said Bake Off and its offshoots are filmed in the summer, which meant she could never have a summer holiday.
She said she first realised she wanted to leave while holidaying in Madagascar. Later, in an article for The Spectator, she went further: “I have been dithering for years about when to stop judging The Great British Bake Off.”
The field moment
Leith said another moment pushed the decision over the line. Speaking on The Shift podcast, she recalled being asked to dance round a field during filming and said, “We weren't judging cake – they wanted us to dance round this field.” She said the ground was uneven, Noel Fielding could leap over it, Paul Hollywood managed it, and she realised, “I’m going to go A over T, you know, this is going to be humiliating beyond belief.”
That is the most revealing part of her exit: the choice was not just about age or workload, but about refusing to keep adjusting her life around summer filming. She said, “Finally, though, the desire to work less and play more got to me.”
What comes after Prue
The immediate question is who takes her seat beside Paul Hollywood, Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding, and when the change reaches the screen. Leith has already given the reason for leaving; the production side now has to turn that choice into a new judging line-up.
