Isaiah Williams is about to get a clearer lane in the Jets' passing game, and the timing matters. With Adonai Mitchell out and Mason Taylor also unavailable, Williams is expected to work as the Jets' WR2 behind Garrett Wilson for Sunday's game against the Bears.
That role change is not coming out of nowhere. Williams has played 80 percent or more of the Jets' offensive snaps in each of the last two games, so this is less of a surprise promotion than a formal recognition of how often he has already been on the field. In Week 3, he logged one catch on two targets in a loss to the Lions, which was not a huge statistical line but did confirm that the Jets are willing to keep him involved.
Why Williams matters now
The bigger picture is simple: the Jets are dealing with multiple absences in the passing game, and that opens the door for Williams to take on a more meaningful share of the offense. When Adonai Mitchell and Mason Taylor are out, the route tree gets thinner and the available targets have to be redistributed. That usually means more responsibility for the receivers who can stay on the field, and Williams has recently been one of them.
His snap rate over the last two games tells the story better than a single box score does. Playing 80 percent or more of offensive snaps suggests trust, durability and a role that fits what the Jets need right now. Against the Bears, that can translate into more chances, especially if Garrett Wilson draws the top defensive attention.
There is still a difference between opportunity and production, of course. Williams has not yet turned his expanded playing time into a big fantasy line, and one catch on two targets in Week 3 shows that volume is still only part of the equation. But in a short-week, injury-thinned setup, the path to relevance is often about role first and results second. For now, Isaiah Williams has the role that matters.
