A 21-year-old man died after an assault in Royal Exchange Square in Glasgow City Centre, after police were called there at about 03:05 on Sunday. He had been seriously injured during the disturbance and died in hospital on Monday.
Police Scotland said another 21-year-old man suffered minor injuries in the same incident. A 19-year-old man was arrested and later released pending further inquiries, while a 20-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the assault.
Det Insp Jonny MacKinnon said: “No-one has been arrested in connection with the death of the man at this time and extensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.” The charged man will appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.
That leaves the inquiry split between the assault charge and the death investigation. Police are treating the charge, the later death and the earlier arrest as separate steps inside the same case, and are still asking anyone with information to contact Police Scotland.
Royal Exchange Square
The sequence matters for anyone trying to understand what happened in Royal Exchange Square. Police first responded on Sunday morning, the injury developed into a fatal case by Monday, and the court process now begins for one of the men arrested after the disturbance.
The open question is what happened during the disturbance itself. Police said they are still working to establish the full circumstances, and that is the point the inquiry has not yet reached publicly.
