Military Trail and 10th Avenue North

Andrew Colton reported the crash while local responders were still working the scene. He said Palm Beach County Fire Rescue was responding to a plane crash in Greenacres near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, and the roadway closure affected traffic through that stretch of Palm Beach County.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said an aircraft incident was under investigation in the area of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. Its statement at 2:41 p.m. told motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes, while Palm Beach County Fire Rescue issued its closure notice at 2:34 p.m.

FAA and NTSB

The FAA said the aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The same update said the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, and the NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and provide all updates.

Initial information identified the aircraft as a Lear Jet that left Austin on Sunday morning. The later FAA update identified it as a Learjet 60 and said it plunged from just over 8,000 feet before the crash. That shift in identification leaves the accident sequence to federal investigators, who now control the case and the public updates tied to it.

No people had been transported to area hospitals at the time of the report, and sources said the plane crashed into a mobile home. The immediate question now is what caused the Learjet 60 to crash in the residential area near Cresthaven.
