Sao Paulo weather shut down Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying barely two minutes after the session began at Interlagos, where torrential rain made the track undriveable. Eight cars had already gone out on intermediate tyres before the red flag came out, and the session stopped before the field could settle into a flying lap.
Gabriel Bortoleto summed up the conditions in plain terms: "When I get out, I need to change my clothes, I'm completely wet!" The rain had been forecast for Saturday at Interlagos, and the FIA said it expected 10 minutes of heavy rainfall before the medical car would be sent out to assess the level of standing water once conditions improved.
Interlagos rain changed the order
Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes, George Russell's Mercedes, Charles Leclerc's Ferrari, Isack Hadjar's Red Bull, Pierre Gasly's Alpine, Franco Colapinto's Alpine, Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin and Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac all ventured out on intermediate tyres. Replays showed Lando Norris almost crashing, while Kimi Antonelli and Isack Hadjar laughed at how ridiculous the conditions were.
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton stayed in the garage and did not venture out on track. That split in approach mattered because the wet surface had already moved from difficult to undriveable by the time the red flag was shown, leaving drivers with very different reads on how much grip Interlagos still offered.
FIA waits on standing water
The FIA did not set a restart time while rain continued to pummel the track. The safety car emerged 35 minutes after the original qualifying start time, and drivers later returned to their cars after the safety car's two recon laps before exiting again as another rain band closed in.
The sequence leaves qualifying dependent on one practical threshold: enough improvement for the FIA to send out the medical car and judge the standing water. Until that happens, the field stays in the garage, with lap times and grid positions still frozen at the point where the weather took control.
Brazilian Grand Prix grid pressure
The interruption comes on a weekend when Max Verstappen topped final practice ahead of Formula 1 qualifying at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton will have to start from the back of the grid, while both Ferrari drivers will take 10-place grid penalties for new internal combustion engines.
For teams, the delay at Interlagos adds another layer to a weekend already shaped by grid penalties and changing track conditions. For drivers, it leaves one immediate question hanging over the afternoon: when qualifying can restart after the rain delay, and who will have the nerve to go first when it does.
